Days before the 2009 BET Awards was scheduled to kickoff, news of Michael Jackson’s untimely death reverberated throughout the world. Suddenly, BET’s planned event of celebrating music’s achievements was overcast with deep shock and sadness, causing BET executives to quickly adjust the show and appropriately honor the King of Pop.
With only hours to plan, CPP and Ne-Yo successfully delivered two moving performances. First, Ne-Yo sang a stirring rendition of Jackson’s popular ballad, “Lady in My Life.” Later, Jamie Foxx joined Ne-Yo on stage and performed, “I’ll Be There”. Of every CPP and Ne-Yo award show performance, the inclusion in the 2009 BET Awards show honoring Michael Jackson remains amongst the most memorable and meaningful.
